Coinbase’s card page lists no spending fee and no annual fee, but it also says a spread applies whenever Coinbase buys, sells or trades crypto for you.

This guide uses only what Coinbase publishes, opened on 10 October 2026: how the card draws on your balance, what it costs, how rewards work and who can get one. Nothing here is financial advice.

How the Coinbase debit card draws on your balance

You can fund the card by linking a bank account or by sending part of a paycheck to Coinbase. When you choose to spend crypto, Coinbase converts it to US dollars for the purchase or ATM withdrawal.

That conversion is the detail people skip. Coinbase states that spending any crypto other than USD or USD Coin involves selling the asset, and selling crypto is a taxable transaction. Spending USD or USDC generally is not, and Coinbase tells cardholders to ask a tax advisor about their own case.

Video: Everyday Investing

The video above is a third-party review, so check any rate or limit it quotes against Coinbase’s pages.

Coinbase Card terms in one table

Coinbase Card (debit) terms as published by Coinbase

Term

What Coinbase says

Card type and issuer

Visa debit card issued by Pathward, N.A., Member FDIC, powered by Marqeta

Who can get it

US residents, excluding Hawaii

Spending fee

None for spending USD or crypto, including USDC

Annual fee

None

Hidden cost to check

A spread applies when Coinbase buys, sells or trades crypto; other fees may apply per the Cardholder Agreement

Credit check

None, but identity information is required under the USA PATRIOT Act

Rewards

Optional crypto rewards, US only, variable rate, rotating offers you pick

Blocked purchases

Includes gambling, money orders, wire transfers and cryptocurrency businesses

Source: coinbase.com/card and the Coinbase Help Center articles “Coinbase Card – Debit card overview” and “Coinbase debit card rewards”, read 10 October 2026. Terms change, so confirm in the Cardholder Agreement.

Where the fees actually sit

“No fees” is accurate for the swipe itself. Coinbase’s own footnote adds that its transaction fee is zero but a spread applies when it buys, sells or trades crypto.

If you spend crypto, that spread is where a cost can hide. If you spend USD already sitting in your account, no conversion happens at all. The spread is part of how the company earns, which our piece on the COIN stock business model explains from the revenue side.

How the rewards work and what can go wrong

Rewards arrive as crypto tokens. Coinbase says earned rewards do not expire, but the reward offers do, and you can pick a new one each month.

If an offer lapses and you pick nothing, Coinbase chooses one for you. The rate is variable and Coinbase tells you to check the app for the current figure. Because the payout is crypto, its dollar value can move after you receive it.

Do not mix this up with the Coinbase One Card, a separate credit card. Coinbase says that one is exclusive to Coinbase One members, whose annual membership starts at $49.99.

Who the card leaves out

Coinbase’s card pages describe availability only for US residents outside Hawaii. If you live in the EU, start with the Bitpanda vs Coinbase comparison for EU users instead.

The blocked-purchase list matters in practice. Because Coinbase excludes cryptocurrency businesses, you cannot use the card to top up another exchange, and gambling, wire transfers and money orders are off the table too.

Anyone who does open a card should treat unexpected messages about it with suspicion.
