CoinLedger explained: how the crypto tax software works

CoinLedger is crypto tax software that connects to your exchanges and wallets, pulls the full transaction history, and turns it into finished tax reports. You can import everything and see your net gains and losses without paying anything. Money only changes hands when you want to download the report itself.

That free-until-download model is the most useful thing to know about the tool. It lets you check whether the software reads your data correctly before you commit a cent.

How CoinLedger imports your transaction history

Four import routes exist. You can auto-sync an exchange through a read-only API key, upload the exchange’s own CSV export, build a custom CSV for anything exotic, or paste a public wallet address so the software reads the chain directly.

Every plan, the free one included, allows unlimited exchange and wallet syncs. CoinLedger lists over 1,000 integrations and full historical price data for more than 20,000 cryptocurrencies, which matters when you traded something obscure in 2019 and no longer remember what it was worth that week.

Margin trading, NFTs and DeFi protocol activity all import on every tier, including the free one, rather than sitting behind the expensive plans. The same goes for the error reconciliation tools that hunt for missing cost basis in what you uploaded.

What lands in the finished report

The paid report is a bundle rather than a single file. It contains IRS Form 8949, a capital gains report split into short and long term, an income report covering mining, staking and interest payouts, and an audit trail report showing every number behind the calculation.

The cost basis method is yours to pick: FIFO, LIFO, HIFO or Adjusted Cost. That choice moves the final number, so it pays to read what a crypto tax calculator really tells you about what you owe before you settle on one.

Tax loss harvesting tools sit alongside those reports and flag positions holding a loss before the year closes.

From there the file exports into TurboTax (online or desktop), TaxACT, H&R Block Desktop and TaxSlayer. The same handoff logic sits behind automated crypto tax reports generally.

CoinLedger pricing tiers and what each one covers

Pricing works per tax year and per transaction count, not as a subscription. Each report is a one-time purchase, and reports are available for any year from 2010 to 2025.

Plan One-time price Transaction limit Tax report download
Portfolio Tracking $0 Unlimited tracking Not included
Hobbyist $49 Up to 100 Included
Investor $99 Up to 1,000 Included
Pro $199+ Up to 3,000+ Included

Go past 3,000 transactions and you buy extra transaction capacity inside the app instead of moving to a different plan. Refunds run for 14 calendar days from purchase. To see how that ladder sits against the rest of the market, check our rundown of crypto tax software pricing.

Where the software stops working for you

CoinLedger calculates and formats. It does not decide your tax residency, judge whether a transfer between two of your own wallets counted as a disposal, or clean up a chaotic 2021 on your behalf.

The free tier stops short of the forms themselves. It shows you a capital gains overview, not a filing-ready Form 8949, so treat it as a preview of the numbers rather than a finished return.

Missing cost basis is the usual sticking point. The built-in error reconciliation tools flag the gaps, but somebody still has to go and dig out the original record. Treat this page as general information and take an accountant’s view on your own return.
